[REF] Individual Equipment Allowance Empty [REF] Individual Equipment Allowance

Post  Guest Mon Jan 23, 2012 4:56 pm

Gang,

In the process of moving house and all that entails, I managed to locate a few books and documents I forgot I had amassed! One of them is an original publication by the Quartermaster School (Camp Lee, Virginia) dated 10 June 1942 entitled "Text on Unit Supply". Among numerous paragraphs of procurement and requisitioning, it also contains a list of almost every item of equipment and clothing, and dictates how, to whom, and to what ratio it was issued.

I think it could prove to be a very useful piece of reference material for events and other impressions, so over the next few days I propose to post up the list. It will require some work in separating out each section into a more sensible categorization (for example Uniforms, Personal Equipment, Webbing Equipment, etc.) as at the moment it's in one long alphabetically-sorted list.

Watch this space!

Regards,
Ben.

Thanks chaps, glad it's of use. There are a few other sections that I have identified if you're interested: Nurses' Equipment, Officer's Clothing and Unit Equipment. If you think they're relevant, I'll post them up too.

You see, and people laugh at me for spending £8 on 300-page original documents on "Unit Supply - Requisitioning and Accounting for Unit Supplies and Equipment"... Razz

Cheers,
Ben.

Great stuff Ben !! Do you have something about the unit equipment in terms of radio equipment (I found a T/O & E (T/O 7-17) of a rifle company but there was no radioman explicitly mentioned (there is a comm NCO in Co. HQ but I recall he is only in charge of communications and not bearing the SCR-300. My bet would be that radiomen would be attached as were the medics but haven(t found any proof of what I'm saying).

Cheers

Hi Pat,

The only Signal Corps Table of Allocation I have is for Camps, Posts and Stations. I think you might need to locate a copy of Table of Basic Allowance, Section II for an Rifle Company.

Let me see what I can find, Pat.

Cheers,
Ben.

Pat,

If I remember right, Rifle Companies are only issued with wire communications sets, that is telephone and 1/4 mile wire on chest reel.

Each Division would have a Signal Company, which contains the Radio Section. It would be their job to organise and control radio nets and equipment.

From FM7-24, 14, C (Radio Section)
"The section is divided into a suitable number of teams, depending upon the number and type of radio sets and the operating personnel available. The section furnishes radio teams (with sets from the division signal company) to accompany elements of the division on the march, or elsewhere as needed, to provide radio communication in normally established or special radio nets."

Field Manuals in the range "FM7-" detail different Infantry Organisations, how they operate and the composition.

I take it from this that radios were allocated as and when required to whom ever. FM7-10, The Rifle Company, does not list Radios as Company equipment, stating runners be used if visual communications fail (flags and lights).

From FM7-10
EQUIPMENT-
The following equipment is furnished for communication purposes:

1.Wire-sets of reel equipment CE-11 (sound-powered telephone handset).
2.Ground signal projectors and Very pistols.
3.Flag sets. (Orange-colored flags mounted on staffs.)
4.Flashlights.
5.Marking panels, black and white.
6.Whistles and bugles.

Hi guys,

In a continued effort to sort through all of my WW2 "Library", I came across another interesting pamphlet, entitled "Personal Preparation for Overseas Duty". It was prepared by the Medical Field Service School in August 1943 for Officers preparing for overseas movement. The booklet lists details such as preparing a Will, Rights of Attorney and so forth, but also includes an interesting chapter on equipment issued by the Army when preparing for movement overseas. While the list relates to Officers mainly, there are some useful data, so I thought I would share it on this thread. It also lists the authorized contents for the Canvas Field Bag (Musette Bag), which I will post separately.

Enjoy!

Item Qty
Bag, Canvas, Field 1
Basin, Canvas, Folding 1
Belt, Pistol or Revolver 1
Blanket, Wool, OD 2
Can, Meat 1
Canteen 1
Cover, Canteen 1
Cup 1
Fork 1

Suspenders, Belt 1
Tag, Identification 2
Tent, Shelter, Half 2
Helmet, Steel, M-1 1
Cap, Wool, Knit 1
Mask, Gas, Lightweight (Issued by Chemical Warfare Service Supply Officer) 1

Thanks,
Ben.

It is possible Murph, i was experimenting only this weekend... It's all in the fold and packing of it, allows plenty of room for a messkit and, probably, although with a bit of an effort (not sure) a few other small items??

You can fold a Raincoat down small enough to fit in a Musette Bag, or in between the outer flap and inner flaps on a Haversack. You button it up, turn it over (so the buttons are on the floor), fold the arms in, and then fold the sides parallel so you're left with a long thin raincoat. Fold up from the bottom twice and then turn over. Your Raincoat should now look like this (top left corner):

Well, when I have a spare week or two, I was going to try to finalise the new website (and Forum!) Hopefully when the site is finished, we can publish Articles and a lot more content. I think it's time we really pushed the website. Hopefully once work quietens down a little, I can focus more on that project. Until then, we can continue to use the Forum.

I was actually thinking that it might be useful for new members to put together a list of equipment they will require for the impressions we do, and more importantly, a guide on how and when it should all be worn.

Cheers,
Ben.

Regarding the new members kit list thats a good idea. It will be good to list essencial items to pull off the basic impression such as clothing, boots and helmet, plus additional items that can be bought with time to complete the look. It may be a good guide on where to focus money as its too tempting to buy items that may only come out once a year!

Yeah, really like the sound of this and the coming together of the new website!!!

I think with these new 'additions' that have been mentioned, which will hopefully feature on the new site, we will have a top notch website that will be one of the best out there in the re-enactment community. At the end of the day, and to state the obvious, our website is in effect our groups 'company brochure' if you will and should reflect the fact that we are a bloody good group with an eye for detail and authenticity and attract interest for that reason.

I agree Ben in that when it's up and running we should really promote the new site and proudly get our name out there more. No worries re timescale, i know life goes on outside of the group and that whenever it goes live it will be worth the wait! Very Happy
