Technician Grades

Post  Guest on Mon Mar 24, 2014 9:34 am

Gents,

Can anyone enlighten me on the role of T4/T5 NCOs in a standard Inf Co.

I know they fulfilled specific roles such as signaller etc but were they assigned to Co HQ or did they make it to the rifle companies etc?

I've tried looking through Google and various websites but had little joy other than to be told they were NCOs which is fairly obvious!

In a Rifle Company, the roles allocated to T4/T5 (Armorer, cook, driver) are all part of the Company HQ and Weapons Platoon.

If I remember right, the remaining T4/T5 are part of the Weapons Platoon, serving as weapons crew (Mortar/.30).

I'm sure they would have found themselves pressed into service with Rifle Squads and several peraonnel in Company HQ were allocated as Anti-Tank, including drivers.

When I get home later this week I should be able to give a more detailed answer

Just reading 'Etched in Purple' by Frank IRGANG, he started out as a combat medic was wounded and on recovery sent to a Repple Depple where he was turned into a rifleman along with some other guys who started out life in the Army with different specialisms.

Seems really odd to take a medic and turn him into a rifleman but there are plenty of accounts showing just this kind of thing happening.   Even read about infantrymen being turned into tankers!

Even allowing for the desperate shortage of riflemen some of the decisions made seem to defy logic in terms of efficiency or is it a simple truth that the infantry get ground down to such an extent they have to be replaced no matter what the cost?

Anyone know if these kind of decsions were common accross the Allied Armies?

You often hear of paratroopers going AWOL before the deploy because of this very reason.. there you were a guy in boots and sebt to fix any space. Paras often ended up in a leg unit. Going AWOL was the only way around this.

I think it was common, particularly late war, to use whatever was available as infantry. Remember that all personnel were trained as basic riflemen. We were always told "You're soldiers first, tradesmen second". The Infantry are the most important part of any army, that's as true today as it was then, and if casualties mount they need replacing, even at the expense of other trades.
