Now there is a man that is talking sense altough I am not sure about getting grotty Very Happy

Maybe this is the standard we should aim to achive for the tactical in April. I can only equate it with my job. New recruits arrive with everything all shiny and new and buy loads of extra gear at their own expense to put on their belts etc as you go along you beging to ditch it.

I now carry a large holdall and dump everything I might need in the car, we do pride ourselves on having a greasey/oil ,dirt stained flourescent jacket and my cap is battered....maybe things don't change.

You are so right! I look a sack of shit at work, but I carry all I need and the "grab-bag" I use in the Police car is half the size of the ones my PC's have, who have only a couple of years service!!!!

Great site How to travel light on a tactical Icon_biggrin
I have seen it before, however I dont agree with all, Once anyone has been mortared and seen the results of non dug in troops (Normandy/Ardennes) you'll NEVER leave your entrenching tool behind...Many NCOs/officers would see this as putting yourself at risk unnecessarily = on a charge How to travel light on a tactical Icon_sad .

" Entrenching tools were one of those items that were carried on condition, and that condition was the type of fighting encountered.Dont think troops were in on where their going to go next and what their going to encouonter.....ww2 soldier could see into the future? For vehicle-bourne troops, or those fighting in an urban enviornment, they were left strapped to one's pack, or delivered by truck only when it was necessary to dig in what if the trucks were sent elswhere/knocked out?. Others kept only the carrier on their belt, as rotating troops were ordered to leave their E-tools for the incoming relief force to dig-in with not all troops had this happen."on 2nd armored trips I have a musette bag on the jeep/M8 and carry zippo/coleman stove/ali tin for cooking in/water/spoon/can openner...the rest you buy (or in ww2 take!) as you need.
Late war replacment troops were arriving at the front without bayonnets/Entrenching tools as they had not taken them from ther dead troops in the past battles, stores in the rear had run out.
Anyway its a great site,
The tactical event in April,
Over the yrs I have as many others been involved in xtra /movie/History channel stuff,They always cover your hands/face with face make up to give the greasey dirty look, and it works great, Nothing looks worse than clean skin in field. The wood/Alcohol tin cooker refils you could get from John Lewis, they had gel refils for fondue burners...work great, German Hesbit cooker,Bundesweir is close to ww2... is good as well.. .
Try to grow your beard a little bit week before.
ASDA used to do choc bars for 50p, rewrap in brown paper and you have what you need for the day.couple of coffee sachets for the night etc..
I like to take German rations like sausage/hard or toothpaste style cheese/black bread wrapped in white cotton, taken from prisoners etc..
The gas bag is one bag youll see all carrying, maybe not with the mask inside!...GP bag also very useful for loose kit.

Wise words Pete, it's tempting to take lots of stuff but I guess keep it simple on the lines if 'I can't eat it or shoot it I 'aint carrying it'

Oh yeah, I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to it but in my day job I have stood outside through the night in the freezing cold and rain. Blankets and coats recommended as well as some cuddling up to your neighbour...

Perhaps you should have a feature week on each member in their pre-war life? Come to think of it what did JC do before the draft?

by the sound of the scream, then the sobs and tears after, one would have thought it was a sea creature.
