Boot dubbing?

What do you guys do to waterproof your boots?

Over here with roughouts we singe off all the "fur" from the rough leather, then shave the boot down a little more--this if from vet testimony. Lacking WWII boot dubbing we use Sno-Seal, which I hear isn't actually made from real, ground up seals(disapointing, since seals appear waterproof). But first we heat the boots up in the oven(BRIEFLY) to open up the pores in the leather. Then we assault the boots wit the Sno-Seal. We've also added shoe polish to help seal or darken them up even more.

I've just purchased a tin of original Dubbing from 'Blunder Buss Antiques' in the UK, on the web. I've not opened it yet but it appears intact.

As for the boot's interesting comments, I just wear em and apply as many coats of normal Carrs Dubbin as I can and they are gradually getting there!

We use "septische uierzalf" (Dutch word)
It is a white colored oinkment
The septic one you put on your face,hands,feet and on injuries.
You get some sort of oily film that protect you against the cold and water or snow.
Prefent also your feet from sweating,so at stops it's less colder.
Put it on the outside of your boots or buckle boots.
Also on the thread underneath.

Last december we marched over 100km in Bastogne(Belgium),Diekirch(Luxemburg) Slept in open air with just a greatcoat,Winterspelt (Germany) via St.Vith to Oudlingen-Burg Reuland (Belgium)sleeping in open haybarn and from there to Vielsalm.

In buckle boots and no blisters.
It seems that during WW2 they used axel grease instead.

I also heard that the GIs would wipe their spoons on their pants/trousers after eating and gradually a layer of grease built up that made them waterproof!

Murph: Thats the explantion I tried to give my mom as a kid, didn't work, lol.

ACE: Interesting about the axle grease. I haven't heard that before, but it makes sense.
The white colored ointment you use now sounds like Sno-Seal, probably related.

No, 'football' boots is correct!!!! As a previous exponent of 'Gridiron' the ball hardly ever touches the foot!!!
It's like calling rugby, football if you catch my drift.

Fortunatley I don't like sports of any kind (was always an old car and gun guy) so I can refrain from the age old Football vs. Soccer debate. I've been told we call it football because we adapted our version from Canadian rugby, which tehy called football at the time. Whats really odd is that almost EVERY city kid grows up playing soccer over here and has for about 20 years, but then they drop it before high school. and there is like almost zero interest in professional level.

I appreciate the offer of the dubbing but hte snow-seal works pretty good and we can get original dubbing (it's just harder to use because it's older). Oddly crates of the stuff show up at flea markets sometimes like the Army still finds it and cuts it loose.

Ill try to find the english word for uierzalf.
But I know the difference between them.
The uierzalf is made from animal fat and the shoe or boot polish is made of wax.
Axle grease is a chemical fat : byproduct of oil
