Very odd. It looks like it's been converted into an "Ike-style" jacket, as was commonplace amongst officers towards the end of the War (they converted their 4-pocket chocolates to this type of configuration). It's got the spray painted insignia of the 1st Marine Division too, which is odd since I don't think they had M43s - surely they'd have been issued P44s by then? It's not my area of expertise though, I'll leave it to the Navy boys to confirm that!

You do see Marines on occupation duty wearing items like that. There is a pic I will try and get it scanned.
