Murph.
Think I've cracked the problem, M has too many songs on her IPOD files and we ran out of memory. Had to delete some of mine Les but I will be sending you a CD of some of the best action shots from the mortar display. Is it easier for you to copy them and send the disc onto Paul or should I do another one for him?

Re: Peak Rail 2008 101st Airborne with 81mm mortar
Nobody really knows, and there's no agreed origin. Some say, as Paul has said that it comes from the days of ACW re-enactment when others would say "Far be it from me to criticize, but..." Others claim it comes from the rather bright and over-coloured uniforms worn by some ACW re-enactos, and is taken from the German for colour (farbe). Either way, the origins are exactly unknown, but the term itself is largely believed to date from the mid 1960s.
Another possible origin is taken from the following letter dated 1 April 1863 from A.R. Crawford in the 76th Illinois Infantry, Co D (here's only a portion):
Six children from the local village appeared wearing fallacious accoutrements & reprehensible baggage and thought they would put a sham battle on for our amusement. We laughed so hard at their imitation of soldiers that our sides were hurting for hours. Talk about poorly drilled fresh fish. These boys were made honorary officers starting with general down to private. They each got a penny or more tossed at them and ran off, no doubt, to delight others.
Some claim it's the oldest reference to the word "FARB", others claim it's simply a tongue in cheek explanation!
Cheers,
Ben.
